Case Study Details
Manns had been at the heart of Cranleigh high street for 134 years but, at the end of September 2021, it closed its doors for good. In 1887 Cranleigh resident, David Mann, purchased a struggling general store in the popular Surrey high street and started selling hardware, ironmongery, and agricultural equipment. Fast forward 100 years and Manns of Cranleigh had expanded to sell a wide range of home and garden products including carpets and furniture, occupying over 40,000 square feet and employing around 50 people.
The sad loss of a Cranleigh icon
When the store closed it left a large and prominent hole in Cranleigh high street, with the once colourful window displays replaced with brown paper. Waverley Borough Council were keen to give the former department store a temporary makeover. Having supplied signs, banners and vinyl graphics to Waverley Council for many years, they were familiar with our large format printing capabilities and approached us to undertake the project.
Promoting Cranleigh high street
Waverley Borough Council were keen to promote Cranleigh as a destination and the large windows of Manns department store provided the perfect canvas for our large format vinyl window graphics. Using imagery of the local area supplied by Waverley Council, and some great artwork by the Year 6 children at Cranleigh C of E Primary School, we printed full colour graphics for the windows on self-adhesive vinyl. As the window displays would be temporary, we specified an easily removable vinyl with a special low tack adhesive, allowing the window graphics to be easily removed for up to a year without leaving any residue or damaging the building façade.
Transformed with vinyl window graphics
Installing large format vinyl window graphics can be tricky, particularly in cold weather, but John and James had the 4 large windows covered in quick time. The lovely period window frames called for expert cutting by James while John used his years of experience to gently heat the vinyl, ensuring that the special adhesive was activated, and all air bubbles were removed. Within a couple of hours, the now sad looking front of this iconic Cranleigh landmark was transformed. And judging by the number of positive comments we received from passing locals, the residents of Cranleigh approved of the transformation.
